Barber Family History

David was proud of his service in the Revolution and in the Civil War and kept in contact with his fellow veterans through membership in the Texas Veterans Association. The photograph below shows Kokernot with fellow veterans, apperantly around 1886. It came to the hands of Kent Gardien in the early 1970's and he passed it to Luther Hill in San Antonio who, with Catharine McDowell of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas Library attempted to identify the individuals. Their incomplete, and tentative, identifications are below the picture. There is no doubt about David Kokernot, seated fourth from left, however. The odd thing about the picture is that a good part of it is a poorly done fake. The four men standing at the back were clearly added later.

Back row left to right: Jeffrey Barksdale Hill, Gonzales Co; Orlando Phelps, Brazoria Co; John Himes Livergood, Lavaca Co; J. H. Calvert, Robertson Co; John Karner, Mexia; John Bate Berry (age 74 in 1886!), Mason Co; George ____, DeWitt Co; Claudius Buster, Washington Co; (William Carroll Jackson) Hill; unknown.

Seated left to right: unknown; unknown; D. H. Van Vetchen, Waller Co; David Levi Kokernot, Gonzales Co; unknown; William Kinchen Davis, Fort Bend Co.
